Strength Stories: Rachel G.

For this month’s STRENGTH STORIES I’d like to give a shout out to Rachel!
I asked Rachel to share how strength training has impacted her life. Her story is below, check it out!
“Like so many women, I bought into the myth that strength training was a one-way ticket to bulk city so I never had any interest in ever learning about it or engaging with weight training.
After I had made running more of priority in my life, I started to notice that I wasn't losing weight and my legs weren't able to keep up because they were not getting any stronger. Ryan suggested I started adding weightlifting into my routine so I started with 10-pound dumbbells in my tiny NYC apartment. My progression happened slowly over time and it happened even though I swore it wouldn't.
For me, lifting weights is the deepest form of self-care I can imagine for myself. As a person who deeply struggles with anxiety, it gives me space where I must be present otherwise this heavy weight is about to crash down on me...literally. Outside of the gym life can be pure chaos, but in the gym, it is my chance to slow down and reconnect with my mind and body.
I started with squatting 10-pound dumbbells in my apartment to being able to squat 125 pounds...talk about gains! Also, I am not bulky as heck like the fitness industry promises women will be if they touch heavy weight.
I have actually lost weight since weightlifting that running 10 miles a day couldn't get off me..so don't buy into these myths that are set up for women! Instead, push against them, challenge them, throw weights over your head, and get in tune with yourself. Your mind and body with thank you for it.”
